Exercise – Ideas in Conversation.
In the lesson you just completed, you explored how both scholars and visual artists participate in conversations with others when they literally (with cited sources) or figuratively (with visual allusions) reference each other’s works. Journalists also participate in conversations when they report news and when writing editorials. When journals cite their sources, they do not tend to use a formal academic style, but it is generally considered a sign of good journalism to have many respected and verified sources within an article. But why does this matter? We hope the following exercise will help clarify the reason why these conversations matter.
